The colours

Ireland's colours

The 1903 Gordon Bennett Cup was run on closed roads in Ireland, and the green the British cars wore that year is often given as the origin of British racing green.

  • green #169b62
  • white #f4f4f2
  • orange #ff883e

Three ways to wear them

The designs

01

Irish flag crown

The flag worked over the crown, readable from above and behind.

02

Irish heritage

A light shell, period pinstripes and small flags on the sides.

03

Irish shards

The main colour as the base, angular side shards with pinstripes.

Tips

Using Irish colours on a helmet

  1. 01

A vertical flag becomes a band from the visor, over the crown, to the nape. Keep green on the left as you look at the back, so the flag reads the right way round to anyone behind you.

  2. 02

White does the separating on Ireland's flag. On a helmet, a thin white pinstripe between green and orange keeps the edge crisp, and a white base makes the other colours look brighter.

  3. 03

Keep the flag itself small and somewhere it stays flat, such as behind the ear or low on the back. Flags on the curve of the crown stretch, and a small, sharp flag reads better from a distance than a large, distorted one.
